Friends We
Haven’t Met Yet

Our story

We invite people, often strangers, to come stay in our home in New Orleans. We share ordinary life, do things together, and get to know each other. Friendships and stories can grow from that time. We learned this through travel and hosting, and we’d love you to join us.

HOW WE FOUND OUR WAY HERE

Since 2009

  1. Michigan → the road (2009)

In September 2009 we left Michigan to "practice retirement." Our very first Couchsurfing stay was in London, Ontario. It was incredible, and we were hooked.

  2. Practicing retirement (2009–2012)

For two and a half years we lived as if we had no obligations, staying with friends, family, and strangers across the US and around the world. We learned that travel is wonderful, but it wasn't how we wanted to live. We wanted purpose.

  3. Miami (2012)

We settled in Miami for a while and opened our condo. About ten Couchsurfing guests and roughly a hundred Airbnb guests from around the world came through, and some became lifelong friends.

  4. New Orleans (2014)

New Orleans was calling us. Here we opened our home, our compound, and our lives a little wider. Guests like Tony, Chen, and Jeff came for a stay and became part of the family.

  5. Now

Friends We Haven't Met Yet is the purpose we were looking for, and it's how we plan to spend the years ahead.

Time to know each other.

Meaningful time takes a real commitment, especially when we don’t yet know each other. There’s a chance involved. We’ve found it can be deeply rewarding.

Be yourself. Let’s connect.

A longer stay gives us time to settle in, relax, and be ourselves. We share meals, work, outings, and ordinary days. Relationships can develop along the way.

Hosts who welcomed us on our travels, and guests who later stayed with us, have become lasting parts of our lives.

How it begins.

A hello might begin on a walk, through a hosting website, or in the courtyard when an Airbnb guest stops to chat. Other visits begin with calls and plans made ahead.

Perhaps you remember Danielle or Greg from school, college, or another part of life. We’d love to hear from you and talk about a visit.

Who knows what might develop?

We can make room, pay attention, and be thoughtful hosts. A visit might become a friendship, someone might return, or we might simply be glad we shared that time. There’s no obligation to make it anything more.

Something to experience.

This site offers a glimpse and an invitation. What it means comes from being here, living it, and looking back on the people and moments that stay with us.

TIME TOGETHER · OUR MEMORIES

We don’t know
where a hello will lead.

We meet people in the most unlikely places: through hosting websites, out on walks, and even at parties. Sometimes those connections turn into a lovely stay. Sometimes we’re still part of each other’s lives years later. Here are a few people we think of when we talk about Friends We Haven’t Met Yet.

Tony

Tony arrived in the fall of 2020, as he was beginning to travel full time and live home-free. He’s returned for a few months every year since, helping with big projects and sharing meals, fun, and everyday companionship.

Over the years, a stay has become a lifelong friendship. We’ve come to know his family and friends too, and he’s become part of ours.

Chen

Chen came with a friend over Thanksgiving break while at UMass. In the courtyard, they met another guest and became curious about that way of staying. Later, Chen messaged about spending a month with us during winter break. We talked, made arrangements, and spent that month together.

One of Greg’s most moving memories is driving Chen to the airport. Chen teared up and said, “I understand a lot more why you do this.”

Jeff

We met Jeff through HelpX. He came from England and has returned a couple of times. He was always finding something to do: helping with all sorts of things around here, then heading out into New Orleans’ nightlife and community.

Some of his outings led us to discover things we might never have found otherwise. We hope to visit him in Birmingham someday.

Helen

We stayed with Helen in England through Couchsurfing. She has visited us over the years, too. It’s one of those friendships that began with someone opening their home.

Roberta

We met Roberta at a wedding. She’s a teacher from Michigan who loves New Orleans, and she returns in the summers for weeks or months. A wedding introduction became a continuing friendship.

Raphael

Raphael was in his last year of school in Paris when he came to stay for about a month and a half. About a week into the visit, we invited him along on a road trip to Michigan.

We admired the courage it took to join us and stay with family he hadn’t met before. We loved sharing a Detroit Tigers baseball game, small-town Michigan, and our everyday New Orleans life with him.

There are so many other stories, and more still to come. We’re curious about the people we haven’t met yet and what your own story here might be.

These are our memories of particular connections. Each visit finds its own shape, with arrangements we agree together.

WHAT A VISIT CAN LOOK LIKE

Join a life already
in progress.

We’re Danielle and Greg. Friends We Haven’t Met Yet is our invitation to share everyday life: useful work, curiosity, and time to get to know each other. Our rentals offer a separate way to stay in New Orleans.

01

The everyday things

We might be heading out for dinner, walking Harry, thrifting, running errands, or going to a neighborhood event. When we’re around, we often invite guests into what we’re already doing.

02

Your curiosity, too

Some of our favorite adventures start with a guest saying, “I want to go see this.” Bring your own interests. There’s room for discovering something together.

03

Space to do your thing

Weekdays are often independent while we’re at work. Time together can sit alongside exploring New Orleans on your own, quiet time, and ordinary life.

OUR NEW ORLEANS WORLD

A city that feeds
both our souls.

We love New Orleans: the art, music, food, Mardi Gras, neighborhoods, architecture, and amazing people. A strong local community welcomed us here, and we love being part of it. We enjoy sharing this city. Come visit and discover your own connection.

Danielle’s creative world

Danielle loves making things that invite people to express themselves, from costumes and headpieces to the colors of Elektra Cosmetics. New Orleans’ creative communities, Chaissez Ladies, Merry Antoinettes, Krewes, and friendships are a big part of her life. She enjoys sharing that spirit with people who want to play, make something, and discover a little more of their own creativity.

Elektra Cosmetics is part of our work. See what we have going on . SHINE Studio · directions to the address brings spaces, tools, and creative resources into the conversation when there’s a thoughtful fit.

Greg’s useful curiosity

Greg is curious about people, ideas, and how things work. He enjoys technology, entrepreneurship, and hands-on problem-solving, and he’s especially interested in what people can discover and build together.

Meeting travelers is part of that curiosity: a chance to swap stories, learn a new skill, share what he knows, and make a new friend.

Meet Harry Nudini

Harry is our seal point Sphynx and part of everyday life. Visitors can hang out with him and sometimes join neighborhood adventures when it works for everyone.

Hairless does not mean allergy-free. Please discuss cat allergies before a visit; we don’t host guest pets in our home.

FAMILIARITY TAKES ITS OWN TIME

There’s room
to be yourself.

A good visit doesn’t need a grand itinerary.

A shared meal can be enough. So can a conversation, working alongside each other, or spending time in the same place without filling every minute.

We’ll be clear about schedules, privacy, costs or contributions, and what works for everyone. A visit begins with mutual agreement, and connection gets to find its own pace.
